Myth buster: It’s best to tell the children about the divorce once we have it all figured out

Today we’re going to be talking about one of the most common myths I hear from my clients.

Many people believe that it’s better to tell the children about the divorce at a later stage, once they have answers to all their questions and they’re able to talk them through the details of the child arrangements. Actually, psychologists recommend speaking to children early on in the process.
The reason for that is that they will sense the tension and they will get anxious knowing that something is adrift but not understanding exactly what’s happening.

The recommendation is to sit down with your children early on in the process, ideally with your soon-to-be ex, and to discuss with them what’s happening, tell them what you know and what you don’t know, answer their questions, and especially take time to reassure them.
